The House Republicans’ campaign arm outperformed its Democratic counterpart last month, for the first time in a single month this year, as the race to 2024 heats up.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) announced Thursday that raised US$12.6 million for their House candidates in May, compared to the $11.9 million from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) absorbed. Both totals were records for the committees in the month of May.

An NRCC press release states that the group raised more than $1 million from small donations in the days following former President Trump’s conviction in his secret trial in New York, and about a third of them had not previously donated to the committee .

“Increasing a majority is a team effort, and we broke this fundraising record with the help of everyday Americans and our incredible leadership team,” said NRCC Chairman Rep. Richard Hudson (RN.C.) at the communicated.

The DCCC still has the edge both in cash on hand, with $78.8 million compared to the NRCC’s $64.9 million, and in total fundraising over this cycle, with $191 million compared to $147. 4 million.

“With the record support we are receiving from across the country, we will ensure our frontline members and candidates have the resources to make Hakeem Jeffries Speaker of the House and get Congress back to work next year,” DCCC Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene (D- Wash.) wrote in a statement.

Still, last month’s NRCC numbers are an improvement in closing the gap.

The two parties are locked in a fierce battle for the House in November, with Republicans holding a narrow majority in the lower house of Congress.

Republicans will seek seats to try to give them more breathing room than the party has had throughout this legislative session, while Democrats will try to regain control of the body after losing it in 2022.
