Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum is the “best” choice to be former President Trump’s running mate.
Burgum became a leading contender for Trump’s vice presidential pick, frequently vouching for him in press interviews and during campaign trials. The North Dakota senator signaled in an interview with KFYR that he believes Burgum would be a stronger candidate to be Trump’s running mate.
“The other three most mentioned are all senators, they are all colleagues of mine. I love them all, any of them would be fine. I think Doug Burgum would be better. And I think that’s the growing opinion of more and more observers, as well as the president himself,” Cramer said.
He was asked about a recent report from NBC News which listed Burgum alongside Senators JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Marco Rubio (R-Florida) as the top three choices to be Trump’s vice presidential nominee.
“There has never been anything that Doug has done or said, or anyone has said about him, that has deterred Donald Trump in any way,” Cramer said.
Trump said that although he has decided who his running mate will be, his choice still remains in the dark. He is expected to announce his choice at the Republican National Committee (RNC) convention next month.
Several other Republicans have received vetting materials as potential vice presidential candidates, including Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Rep. Elise Stefanik (R.N.Y.), the Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida) and former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson.
Burgum did not say on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday whether he had a conversation with the former president about him potentially serving as his running mate. He also said Trump could win the election “regardless of who the vice president is.”
“This process is up to President Trump. And that’s where the conversation should remain,” he said.
