Former President Trump took aim at former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after she called him “dangerous” and “evil” on Sunday following his false claims about the January 6, 2021 attacks.
In two Sunday interviews, Pelosi criticized Trump for his comments during last week’s debate blaming her for the lack of security at the Capitol on January 6.
She said on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki” that he lied during the debate, saying it was Trump “who wouldn’t send the National Guard” to the Capitol.
“What he did on January 6th – people died or were injured. This is a dangerous, evil person,” she said Sunday on MSNBC.
She also dismissed his comments during CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“This president – look, he lied about January 6th. This was a horrible event in our country’s history. He was a former president of the United States who instigated an insurrection. He tries to blame me,” she said on Sunday.
Trump took to social media to respond to Pelosi’s comments.
“Crazy Nancy Pelosi, who the other day was exposed by her daughter, a filmmaker, as being entirely responsible for the lack of security on January 6, is, in my opinion, more cognitively impaired than Crooked Joe Biden,” he wrote on TruthSocial.
“I just saw her give an interview and she was kind of ‘off’. Additionally, she suffers from TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes called TDS, and her case is terminal! She is a sick ‘dog’ and always has been!!!” He continued.
During Thursday’s debate, Trump said Pelosi refused his offer to send 10,000 additional troops to the Capitol on January 6. The New York Times debate fact checks said this comment was misleading, noting that the Speaker of the House at the time did not have the authority to make it.
“And Nancy Pelosi, if you just watch the news from two days ago, on tape to her daughter — who’s a documentary filmmaker, as they say — what she’s saying, ‘Oh no, it’s my responsibility, I was responsible for this. ‘ Because I offered her 10,000 troops or the National Guard, and she refused,” Trump said on Thursday.
The New York Times reported that Trump was referencing a video recently released by GOP-led House Oversight and Accountability Committee that was filmed by Pelosi’s daughter, Alexandria, for a documentary about the former House speaker. It shows her talking about the safety of January 6th while in the car.
At one point in the video, Pelosi can be heard saying that she “takes[s] responsibility for not having them prepared for more, because it’s stupid because we’re in a situation like this.” She also questioned why the National Guard “wasn’t there to begin with.”
The full footage has not been released publicly and she did not admit in the short video that she refused additional troops. Ian Krager, Pelosi’s spokesman, responded to Trump’s comments, saying the former president “is not responsible for the security of the Capitol Complex.”
“It is pathetic that three years later, Trump and his MAGA allies are still trying to cover up the deadly insurrection. The American people saw for themselves the dangers to democracy on January 6th and can see through the Republicans’ revisionist history,” he added.
