Analyst Fernanda Magnotta commented on a survey by CNN which indicates that the majority of Democratic voters think that the party would have a better chance without Joe Biden as a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections. According to Magnotta, there are difficulties for Biden’s eventual replacement.

She pointed out that Biden was chosen in the last elections because he was a conciliatory figure in an “absolutely fragmented” and “very heterogeneous” party. “Names that create consensus are a scarce asset in the Democratic party,” she said.

Magnotta also highlights the difficulty of names in the party that captivate the younger and more progressive public, while at the same time being able to please older and conservative voters.

Furthermore, Magnotta highlighted that Biden’s potential replacements face the difficulty of not having national projection, being known only regionally. “We are talking about a dispute in which on the other side there is a character like Donald Trump who, at least, everyone knows”, she highlighted.

Another factor that makes replacement difficult is the legitimacy of Biden, who was chosen by more than 90% of Democratic voters in the primaries. According to Magnotta, the party would need to go through a process of “self-criticism and accountability” to its voters to remove him.

The analyst also warned of the political risks of a possible late replacement, which could benefit Trump by questioning Biden’s ability to hold the presidency.
