Former Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.) said Vice President Harris is “increasing her role” in the campaign ahead of the November election.

Richmond, co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, said Sunday on MSNBC’s “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart” that the vice president will step up her involvement in the campaign. This comes as the campaign and White House are still trying to calm concerns about President Biden’s ability to win a second term after a lackluster debate performance last month.

“She’s stepping up her role and has been a valued partner since day one. I won’t go into detail about whether she’s been covered fairly in the press, but she’s a valued partner. She’s incredibly smart,” he said. “And I will just say that not only has she publicly stated her support for President Biden, but she has said it privately.”

Harris has been walking a fine line as some have suggested she replace Biden at the top of the ticket. She reiterated her support for Biden and doubled down on his ability to serve a second term.

Richmond also said that California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) also expressed their support for Biden after the debate. The two Democratic governors were considered possible replacements for Biden, but remained supportive of his re-election effort.

“I was with Gavin Newsom after the debate when he did the same, and Gretchen Whitmer was at the meeting yesterday and reiterated her support,” Richmond said.

“Leaders are rallying around this president and vice president because they understand what is at stake and they understand what they have achieved,” he added.
