Kamala Harris, vice-president of the United States, has 49% of voting intentions among registered voters, against 47% for Donald Trump, according to a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll, in a scenario in which she will contest the American elections for Democratic party in place of Joe Biden.
In another hypothetical scenario, Biden and Donald Trump appear tied with 46%.
Majority thinks Biden should give up
The President of the United States is under pressure from within his own party to give up his candidacy for re-election, after questions about his physical and mental fitness increased due to his poor performance in the Debate of the United States. CNN, at the end of June.
The new survey revealed that 67% of adults surveyed think Biden should give up the campaign. 30% understand that he should continue running, and 3% did not respond.
Among Democrats, 56% think that Biden should leave the race. Meanwhile, 42% said the president should continue, and 2% did not respond.
Who should replace Biden?
In an open question, Democrats and independent voters who lean towards voting for the Democratic party were able to say who they would choose as a candidate to run in the elections if Joe Biden drops out. The top three placed were:
- Kamala Harris, US Vice President (29%)
- Gavin Newson, Governor of California (7%)
- Michelle Obama, former first lady (4%)
For this question, 1,255 Democrats and independent voters who tend to vote for the Democratic party were consulted, with a margin of error of plus or minus three percentage points.
Republicans show support for Trump’s candidacy
The survey also questioned whether Donald Trump should give up his candidacy or maintain it.
For 50% of adults consulted, the former president should leave the presidential race. 47% think he should continue running, and 3% did not respond.
However, the survey revealed that Trump has strong support among Republican voters, even after being criminally convicted and facing other legal proceedings.
For just 11% of Republicans interviewed, Donald Trump should stop running. 88% think he should run in the elections, and 1% did not respond.
Methodology
The Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos survey polled 2,431 adults in the United States, with a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points in questions for this audience.
In addition, 825 Democrats were consulted, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
697 Republicans were also heard, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points in questions for this audience.
As for registered voters, 2,041 people were consulted, with a margin of error of two percentage points.
The survey took place between July 5th and 9th, 2024.
