Donald Trump Jr. will speak at next week’s Republican convention ahead of his father’s pick for vice president, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to The Hill.
is a close ally and friend of Senator JD Vance (R-Ohio), one of the finalists being considered as former President Trump’s running mate. Trump Jr.’s speech will likely fuel speculation that Vance is the pick.
One source downplayed that Trump Jr.’s speaking time is an indication of who the pick will be, telling The Hill that Trump Jr.
But the former president’s son made no secret of his preference for his father’s running mate over Vance’s finalists, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum.
“You know, everybody knows, I kind of defended J.D. Vance,” Trump Jr. said on a recent episode of his podcast.
The elder Trump is expected to make his choice public before the Republican National Convention, which begins next Monday, although the former president has said he may wait until the convention itself to announce it in order to create suspense.
Vance and Rubio said Sunday they had not heard one way or the other whether they were chosen to join Trump on the ticket.
Trump is scheduled to hold a rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, not far from the Ohio border.
