Meta announced this Friday (12) that it will remove part of the restrictions it applied against the profiles of the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, on Facebook and Instagram.
The social media company indefinitely suspended Trump’s accounts after he expressed support for the people who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. The company released his accounts in early 2023, saying it would monitor the Republican’s posts to verify possible violations, which could result in another suspension that could vary from one month to two years.
Now, according to Meta, Trump, who will contest the election against the current US president, Joe Biden, will no longer be subject to additional monitoring.
“In assessing our responsibility to enable political expression, we believe the American people should be able to listen to presidential candidates equally,” Meta said in a statement.
Some social media experts have long criticized Meta and other platforms for failing to moderate political content, including that coming from candidates.
Trump was also banned from Twitter, now called X, in 2021. Billionaire Elon Musk reactivated the account after buying the company in 2022, although the former president has posted on the platform just once since then.
Donald Trump has his own social network, Truth Social, where he posts regularly.
