Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said Sunday that Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio)’s response to former President Trump’s assassination attempt should “disqualify” him from serving as vice president.

Vance, Trump’s top choice as running mate, said in a social media post Saturday that the shooting was “not an isolated incident” and suggested that President Biden’s campaign was at least in part to blame.

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance said. on social platform X. “This rhetoric directly led to the attempted assassination of President Trump.”

Kinzinger – a former GOP member of Congress who has become a frequent critic of Trump – responded to Vance’s postsaying, “This should absolutely disqualify @JDVance1 from VP.”

Vance’s statement came just hours after Trump was removed from the stage at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday after Trump appeared to be injured in what authorities call an assassination attempt.

At the time of Vance’s statement, there was no public information about the shooter’s motive or details of the incident.

Both Republicans and Democrats called for lowering the temperature of political rhetoric.

President Biden has ordered a full security review for Trump’s rally on Saturday and a security assessment for the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee.

The Hill reached out to Vance’s campaign for a response.
