Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.) on Sunday sharply criticized an anonymous “senior Democrat” who was quoted saying the party was “resigned” to four more years under former President Trump.
Ocasio-Cortez, in a post on social platform X, said Democratic members who feel this way should “absolutely retire” from their positions in Congress.
“If you are a ‘senior Democrat’ who feels this way, you should absolutely retire and make room for real leadership that refuses to resign to fascism,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on X.
“This type of leadership is functionally useless for the American people,” she added. “Retire.”
Ocasio-Cortez was responding to Axios report about a shift among Democrats who say they are focusing more now on the personal safety of their employees rather than President Biden’s standing as the party’s presidential nominee.
“We have all resigned ourselves to a second Trump presidency,” said a top House Democrat in the Axios story.
Democrats and Republicans have largely signaled an effort to strike a unified tone following the assassination attempt on Trump’s life.
Biden’s campaign has paused political activity, even pulling political advertising for now.
