The world suffered a global cyber blackout, which affected everything from transport services to hospitals.
More than 3,700 flights were canceled worldwide, and more than 32,000 were delayed, according to the specialized website FlightAware. See the animation below:
What caused the blackout?
The global cyber blackout happened due to an issue with cybersecurity company CrowdStrike.
The company’s CEO, George Kurtz, reported that the interruptions were caused by a defect found in a single content update of its software on Microsoft Windows operating systems.
Computers running Windows appear to be crashing due to the incorrect way a software code update issued by CrowdStrike interacts with the system.
Kurtz highlighted that a correction has already been implemented, but experts highlighted that the situation may take time to return to normal.
