Kamala Harris speaks at first rally since Biden’s withdrawal

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, spoke at a campaign rally in Milwaukee, in the state of Wisconsin, this Tuesday (23).

The event marked his first trip to a key election state after taking control of the Democratic presidential nomination to challenge Donald Trump.

“The road to the White House goes through Wisconsin,” Harris told her supporters at the Milwaukee rally.

The vice president praised Joe Biden and noted that she is deeply grateful for the Democrat’s continued service to the nation.

“It is a great honor for me to have Joe Biden’s support in this race,” she said.

Harris also explained that she discovered this Tuesday morning that she had the support of a sufficient number of delegates – a figure in the US electoral system – to be the Democratic Party’s candidate for the White House.

“I am very honored and I promise you that I will spend the next few weeks continuing to unite our party so that we are ready to win in November,” she highlighted.

New attacks against Trump

Kamala Harris once again attacked Donald Trump, with whom she will likely compete for President on November 5th.

The crowd briefly chanted “arrest him,” in reference to Donald Trump. In 2016, the former president’s supporters frequently referenced then-Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and shouted “arrest her” at the Republican’s rallies.

She repeated what she said in a speech on Monday (22), recalling the period in which she was state attorney general and highlighting that she dealt with criminals of all types.

“Predators who abused women, fraudsters who stole from consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain. So hear me when I say: I know Donald Trump’s type,” she commented.

“And in this campaign, I promise you: I will proudly put my record up against his any day of the week,” she added.

The US vice president will also stop Donald Trump’s abortion bans and help restore reproductive freedoms.

“And we who believe in reproductive freedom will stop Donald Trump’s extreme abortion bans, because we trust women to make decisions about their own bodies and not have the government tell them what to do,” Harris told a cheering crowd.

“And when Congress passes a law to restore reproductive freedoms, as president of the United States, I will sign it into law,” he stressed.

Kamala Harris also repeated that strengthening the middle class will be one of the focuses of her possible government.

Why is Wisconsin important?

The trip to Wisconsin – one of the three “Blue Wall” states, alongside Pennsylvania and Michigan in the US – is Harris’s fifth this year and ninth since becoming vice president.

With Biden as the Democratic candidate, the party’s path to winning 270 electoral college votes passed directly through these states. This could be the same for Harris.

However, it is too early to say whether another path – one that includes the Sun Belt swing states of Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina and Georgia in the US – could form a larger part of the Democrat’s calculus.
