After weeks of disarray, the Democratic Party finally welcomed a new challenge: answering the many celebrity calls.
After an unusual period of little celebrity support for President Joe Biden that persisted for months as he sought a second term, Hollywood has been revived and is ready to support the party’s new presumptive nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris, as she faces former President Donald Trump.
“My phone won’t stop ringing,” a source close to the Harris campaign told CNN about the sudden increase in calls from Hollywood. “I don’t even have time to answer my phone.”
A celebrity agent told CNN that campaign managers “often beg” talent representatives to get their clients involved in politics, but said that in the past 48 hours since Biden stepped aside and endorsed Harris, it has been nearly impossible to contact the White House.
“I’m usually the one asking my clients,” said another celebrity agent. “Nobody had to ask. People were asking, ‘What do I do and how can I help?’”
In recent days, the mood in Hollywood has completely changed after a long period of blackout, where celebrities were reluctant to publicly support the president, recognizing that neither candidate – neither Biden nor Trump – were particularly popular and could potentially alienate their fan bases.
Even before Biden’s disastrous performance in the US presidential debate, CNN on June 27, multiple sources in Hollywood and Washington D.C. told CNN that the Biden campaign was struggling to gain celebrity support in a polarized world.
“I don’t think people realized how worried they were until they had hope,” said a Democratic strategist with deep ties to the entertainment industry.
For Hollywood, Harris is that hope.
