In his Oval Office speech explaining his decision to drop out of the race, President Biden acknowledged that it was time to “pass the torch to a new generation.”
“Nothing, nothing, can stop the salvation of our democracy,” he said in a 10-minute speech. “That includes personal ambition.”
“I draw strength and find joy in working for the American people,” Biden said. “But this sacred task of perfecting our union is not about me. It’s about you. Your families. Your futures. It’s about ‘We the People.'”
Biden said he plans to finish his term working on several initiatives, including reforms to the Supreme Court.
He did not mention former President Donald Trump by name, but made veiled references to what he considers the danger of a possible second Trump term.
“The best of America is here, kings and dictators don’t govern,” Biden said. The story is in his hands. The power is in your hands. The idea of America is in your hands.”
