Former US President Barack Obama plans to support Vice President Kamala Harris as the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate soon, NBC News reported on Thursday (25).
Obama fully supported Harris’ candidacy and has been in regular contact with her, the report said, citing people familiar with the discussions.
“Aides to Obama and Harris have also discussed the possibility of the two appearing on the campaign trail together, although no date has been set.”
With no one stepping forward to challenge Harris for the nomination, she won the support of party delegates on Monday, a day after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping his re-election bid.
The Obama Foundation did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Harris asks for support
Kamala Harris has spoken with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to a familiar source.
It was part of the more than 10 hours the vice president spent working the phones Sunday afternoon and evening to drum up support from Democratic leaders after President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race.
As reported by CNNin less than a day, Harris reached out to more than 100 party leaders, legislators, governors, labor leaders, and leaders of advocacy and civil rights organizations.
In a statement published Sunday, Obama did not support Harris, opting instead to let the partisan process determine the nomination. In contrast, the Clintons expressed their support for the vice president.
