(NewsNation) – Governor Wes Moore (D-Md.) believes Vice President Harris is the best person to defeat former President Trump in the 2024 election.

“The support that the vice president has garnered…I think it’s real,” Moore said Wednesday in “CUOMO.” “This was not a VP coronation. She knows she needs support not just from delegates. When she comes to November, she knows she needs to earn it.”

President Biden delivered on Wednesday a solemn appeal to voters to defend the country’s democracy, as he explained in a speech in the Oval Office his decision to abandon his candidacy for re-election and support Harris.

Insisting that “defending democracy is more important than any title,” Biden delivered his first public speech since announcing Sunday that he would step aside to express an implicit repudiation of Trump. He did not directly criticize Trump, whom he called an existential threat to democracy.

Moore said that the president “made the best choice for himself”, that is, the “best choice for everyone”. He said Biden’s decision shows a true sense of integrity that everyone should admire and respect.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
