Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States, gave a speech against those she classified as extremists this Thursday (25), at an event with a teachers’ union in Houston, in the state of Texas.
“While you teach students about our nation’s past, these extremists attack the freedom to learn the true and complete history of our nation. Including book banning. Banning books in 2024?”, he commented.
“We want to ban assault weapons and they want to ban books. Can you imagine that?” asked Kamala.
The vice president also pointed out that the USA is witnessing a “total attack on freedoms”. “While you teach students about democracy and representative government, extremists attack the sacred freedom to vote,” she pointed out.
Kamala also highlighted that there is an attack on the freedom “to love who you love openly and proudly”.
“Vision for the future” and criticism of Trump
The US vice-president once again spoke of having a “vision for the future” and criticized Donald Trump, who had a “vision for the past”.
Kamala stated that Trump and his allies want to cut benefits to the population, such as Medicare — a US healthcare access program for people over 65 or with disabilities.
“They also want to eliminate the Department of Education. It would take preschool away from hundreds of thousands of children,” she said.
The Democrat also cited “Project 2025”, a set of proposals for the next president of the Republican Party, highlighting that the document is a plan to take the United States to a “dark past”.
Nod to unions and middle class
Also during her speech, Kamala Harris made a nod to unions and the middle class — a sector that she has already said will be one of the focuses of her possible term at the helm of the White House.
“You may not be a union member, but thank the unions for the five-day work week. For an eight-hour shift a day. For sick leave and paid family leave and vacation,” she commented.
“The fact is: unions helped build the American middle class. And when unions are strong, America is strong,” she concluded.
Thanks to Joe Biden
At the beginning of her speech, Kamala once again thanked and praised Joe Biden. On Wednesday night (24), the American president gave a speech explaining the reasons why he gave up his candidacy for re-election.
“Joe showed again what true leadership looks like,” he said, adding that the Democrat led with grace, strength, bold vision and deep compassion.
“As he said, over the next six months he will continue to fight for the American people and we are all grateful for his service to the nation,” he added.
