United States Vice President Kamala Harris said it is time to close the Hamas ceasefire and hostage release agreement for the war in the Gaza Strip.

The speech took place during televised comments after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, this Thursday (25).

“There was a hopeful movement in the negotiations to secure an agreement. And as I just told Prime Minister Netanyahu, it’s time to close this deal,” Kamala highlighted.

After listing the details of the US-backed settlement proposal, she stressed that “it is time for this war to end and end in a way in which Israel is safe, all the hostages are freed, the suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza ends and the Palestinian people can exercise their right to freedom, dignity and self-determination.”

The US vice president also said that she had a “frank and constructive” meeting with Netanyahu, in which she stated that she will always ensure that “Israel is capable of defending itself, including from Iran and Iranian-backed militias, including Hamas and Hezbollah.” .

At the beginning of her speech, Kamala also highlighted that she has an unwavering commitment to the existence of the State of Israel, its security and that of its people.

Concern about “scale of suffering in Gaza”

Still, the Democrat also spoke about the deaths and destruction in the Gaza Strip due to Israeli attacks, commenting that the Palestinian territory is experiencing a “terrible” humanitarian situation.

“I also expressed to the Prime Minister my serious concerns about the scale of human suffering in Gaza, including the deaths of innocent people in Gaza,” he noted.

“What has happened in Gaza over the last nine months is devastating. We cannot look away from these tragedies and we cannot allow ourselves to be insensitive to suffering, and I will not remain silent,” she concluded.

Support for the two-state solution

Kamala Harris also expressed support for the Two-State solution, which aims for an Israeli state and a Palestinian state.

According to the Democrat, this proposal is “the only path that guarantees that Israel remains a safe Jewish and democratic state, and that guarantees that the Palestinians can finally have the freedom, security and prosperity that they deserve”.
