Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) holds the highest net favorability rating of Democratic officials who are rumored to be potential running mates for Vice President Kamala Harris, the party’s presumptive nominee, according to a poll released Sunday.

A plurality of voters, however, say they do not know or have no opinion about most of the possible vice presidential candidates.

In the ABC News/Ipsos poll, held July 26-27, Kelly holds a positive 10-point net favorability rating among Americans: 22% view him favorably, while 12% view him unfavorably. Another 41% say they don’t know him and 24% say they have no opinion.

Three Democrats follow Kelly in second place, with positive net favorability ratings of 4 points: Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (17 percent favorable; 13 percent unfavorable), Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (13 percent favorable; 9 percent unfavorable) and the secretary of transportation. Pete Buttigieg (29 percent favorable; 25 percent unfavorable).

Buttigieg and California Governor Gavin Newsom are the only Democrats known to most respondents: of Buttigieg, 46% do not know (27%) or have no opinion (19%); of Newsom, 45% do not know (26%) or have no opinion (19%).

Newsom fares worse in terms of favorability than Buttigieg, however, with a 12-point negative rating, with 21 percent viewing him favorably and 33 percent viewing him unfavorably.

In the same poll, Harris’ favorability increased by 8 points from the previous poll, conducted a week earlier. The latest poll shows Harris with a positive favorability rating of 1 point, with 43% viewing her favorably and 42% viewing her unfavorably. Last week, 35% viewed her favorably.

Harris, in the poll, also surpassed former President Trump’s 16-point negative favorability rating (36 percent favorable; 52 percent unfavorable) and President Biden’s 13-point negative favorability rating (37 percent favorable; 50 percent unfavorable).

The poll comes as Harris solidifies her position as the party’s presumptive nominee, and public attention focuses on who Harris will choose as her running mate. She faces no serious challenger and Democrats have been lining up to offer their support. She also secured the support of a sufficient number of delegates to win the party’s nomination.

The survey was conducted July 26-27, 2024 and included 1,200 adults. The margin of error is +/- 3.0 percentage points.
