Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) rejected the idea that Vice President Harris’ running mate should be a white man and called concerns about an all-female presidential ticket “bullshit,” in a interview monday on “CBS Mornings.”

“I don’t agree with that,” said Whitmer, Harris’s campaign co-chair, when asked about the idea that Harris should choose a white man to join her ticket.

Whitmer drew on her experience running at Michigan as evidence against this argument.

“I’ll tell you what,” Whitmer continued. “In Michigan, myself, my secretary of state, my attorney general – all the chief executives in Michigan – are women, and each of us has been told that there may be many women on the ticket. Nonsense. We proved that wrong in the swing states.”

The interview comes as anticipation builds ahead of Harris’ expected announcement about her running mate, which Whitmer said in the same interview she hopes will happen in the next six or seven days.

Whitmer is the only woman among the group of Democrats often mentioned as a possible candidate for Harris’ vice presidential pick. The rest are white men. Whitmer has repeatedly stated, however, that she does not intend to seek second place. She said Monday that she is not going through the standard vetting process.

“The vice president has a great group of people from whom she will choose her running mate, and I know I can be her best ally in Michigan as co-chair of this campaign as well,” Whitmer said. .

The Democratic National Committee said last week that it plans to begin a virtual roll call vote to choose its presidential nominee on Aug. 1 and expects Harris to select a running mate by Aug. 7.

Harris is the only major candidate for the party’s nomination and has the support of well more than the 1,976 delegates needed to win the nomination, according to one report. Associated Press poll.
