Voting to make the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, officially the Democratic Party’s candidate for president began this Thursday (1st), with around 4,700 party delegates receiving digital ballots.
Delegates – an American electoral figure – have until 6pm ET on Monday (5) to return the ballots.
There is not much suspense about the outcome of the vote. Kamala is the only name present, as she was the only candidate to gather the required number of delegate signatures.
The party announced on Tuesday (30) that 3,923 delegates petitioned for Kamala, or 99% of those who participated in the process. No other candidate met the 300 signature threshold to qualify for the ballot.
Once Kamala is officially nominated, party rules allow her to nominate her running mate without a separate vote.
Democrats are nominating Kamala ahead of the party’s convention in Chicago later this month to avoid potential litigation over ballot access, especially in Ohio.
While official voting will take place virtually, delegates will hold a ceremonial roll call at the convention, which begins August 19.
