The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, won enough delegate votes to become the official Democratic Party candidate for president of the country. The information was released by the president of the Democratic National Committee, marking a historic moment in American politics.
Kamala will become the first black and Asian woman to lead one of the most important party tickets in the United States. However, her rise is not without controversy, especially from the Republican side.
Trump’s controversial strategy
Former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump has questioned Kamala Harris’ Afro-descendant ethnic origin, sparking controversy in the United States. According to political scientist and Insper professor, Leandro Consentino, this strategy is a “shot in the foot” for Trump.
Consentino argues: “There are clear records of Harris’ genealogy. She is the daughter of Indians on the one hand, but also the daughter of Jamaicans. Black Jamaicans, obviously, came from Africa in the same slavery process that brought slaves to Brazil.”
The expert believes that this questioning may only please Trump’s most radical base, without captivating the undecided electorate between Democrats and Republicans.
The importance of Pennsylvania
Another crucial point in the electoral race is the possibility of Josh Shapiro being announced as a candidate for vice president on Kamala Harris’ ticket. Consentino highlights the strategic importance of this choice: “Bringing Shapiro as a running mate is a success, without a doubt, for Harris’ campaign.”
Shapiro’s choice not only brings diversity to the ticket, as he is a Jewish man, but it could also be decisive in winning the state of Pennsylvania, one of the so-called “swing states” in the American elections.
These states are fundamental because they vary between Republican and Democratic support during elections, and can define the final result.
The American elections continue to be a topic of great international interest, with each candidate’s move being closely analyzed. The Democratic convention, scheduled for the 19th of this month, promises to be a crucial event to define the direction of Kamala Harris’ campaign and the Democratic Party as a whole.
