US Vice President Kamala Harris is planning to attend the previously agreed-upon debate scheduled for September 10 on ABC – even if Republican nominee Donald Trump does not, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.
The source says his understanding is that ABC News would provide airtime to whichever candidate came forward — even if it ended up just being Kamala. ABC News did not respond to ABC’s request for comment. CNN.
Trump said on Friday that he agreed to participate in a debate hosted by Fox News on September 4 and would no longer participate in the ABC debate, as he agreed to do when President Joe Biden was the presumptive Democratic nominee.
This Saturday morning (3), Kamala’s campaign communications director, Michael Tyler, said in a statement that Trump needs to “stop messing around” with the presidential debate.
“Donald Trump is scared and trying to get out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to rescue him,” Tyler said.
“He needs to stop playing around and attend the debate he has already committed to on September 10th. The vice president will be there in one way or another to take advantage of the opportunity to speak to a national audience in prime time,” he added.
Tyler said Kamala’s team would be “happy to discuss new debates after the one both campaigns have already agreed to.”
“Anytime, anywhere, there shouldn’t be a problem with that unless he’s too scared to show up on the 10th,” Tyler added.
