G7 foreign ministers call for efforts to avoid escalating conflict in the Middle East

Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7), made up of the world’s leading democracies, have called on all parties involved in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East to avoid actions that could lead to escalation, Italy’s foreign minister said. this Sunday (4).

During a video conference chaired by Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, G7 ministers expressed “strong concern about recent developments that could lead to a wider regional spread of the crisis, starting with Lebanon,” a statement said.

“We ask the parties involved to desist from any initiative that could hinder the path of dialogue and moderation and encourage further escalation.”, the statement added.

Italy holds the rotating presidency of the G7.

Tensions in the Middle East, inflamed by the 10-month war in Gaza, have risen in recent days following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after an Israeli attack on Beirut. killed Fu’ad Shukr, one of Hezbollah’s top military commanders.

The statement from the G7 meeting also called for the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages there, in addition to reaffirming the commitment of G7 countries to intensify humanitarian aid to the population of the Palestinian enclave.
