The devastated husband of a young mother who died just months after giving birth has revealed the tragic moment he learned she had passed away.

Martin Wood, 56, was “thrilled” to discover his wife Chloe, 25, was pregnant in July 2021, after thinking for years he was infertile.

But Chloe was found ‘face down’ on her bedroom floor by Martin when their baby Addison was seven months old.

She had suffered a seizure – something that was not abnormal for her.

Martin, who says his little girl “gives him strength”, said: “It started as a normal morning; I got up with Addison and Chloe was in bed.

“I went upstairs to get clothes for Addison and found Chloe face down on the floor.

“She had already had so many seizures that I didn’t panic; I rolled her over to revive her, but I noticed her lips were blue.”

Chloe had suffered from epilepsy since she was a teenager and struggled with health problems during her pregnancy.

When she was 32 weeks pregnant, doctors placed Chloe in a coma to stabilize her.

And for safety reasons, the decision was made to deliver their baby, Addison, prematurely via cesarean section in January 2022.

Things only got worse for the Lancashire couple when little Addison suffered a collapsed lung and had to be transferred to a specialist hospital.

“It became a nightmare, I thought I was going to lose them both,” Martin recalled.

Chloe came out of her coma, but initially had no memory of Martin and had no idea she had given birth.

Eight weeks later, Addison was finally well enough to return home.

Chloe came out of her coma, but initially had no memory of Martin and had no idea she had given birth. She was eventually allowed to return home, but struggled with seizures and PTSD.

“She loved being a mother, she was so happy and funny and singing,” Martin said.

Addison was smiling in her bouncy chair, just seven months old, with her dead mummy upstairs.

Chloe’s seizures meant she couldn’t look after Addison alone, so Martin quit his job at a pub and became a full-time father.

In June 2022, Chloe’s condition began to improve.

“We started planning hikes again, looking to the future. I felt like I was getting my wife back,” said the father.

But in August, Chloe suffered a catastrophic seizure and never regained consciousness.

After finding Chloe, Martin called 999 and started CPR.

When paramedics arrived, they worked with Chloe for some time before telling Martin there was nothing they could do.

‘MOMMY WAS DEAD UP THERE’

“I was devastated,” Martin said.

“Addison was smiling in her bouncy chair, just seven months old, with her dead mummy upstairs.”

Tests showed that Chloe died from an epileptic seizure.

Martin is now raising Addison in memory of his mother and says his daughter helped him through his grief.

“I feel so blessed to have met Chloe, she was my soulmate. I miss her every day, but she lives on through her beautiful daughter,” Martin said.

Consumed by sadness, the father began writing a book that he found “very cathartic”.

Martin’s book ‘Dream Walker’ is a young adult fantasy fiction novel that will be published in October.

What is epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a brain condition that can disrupt electrical communication between neurons in the nervous system.

This often leads to seizures, a sudden event that can alter a person’s consciousness, behavior, or feelings.

The condition is typically diagnosed when a person has two or more unprovoked attacks separated by at least 24 hours.

Epilepsy can begin at any age, but tends to affect people in early childhood or over 60.
