An after-sun lotion that allegedly “burns like acid” and leaves children in tears has been pulled from shelves in Boots.

The retailer said it took customer complaints seriously and immediately withdrew its Soltan Soothe & Cool Crackling Aftersun Mousse from sale.

The product, which “pops on application”, is advertised as “instantly cooling and refreshing” while “providing deep hydration and gentle nourishment, leaving your skin soft, soothed and refreshed”.

But it has received 65 one-star reviews online saying it does just the opposite, with many warning others to stay away.

The latest one says: “Don’t buy this. It burns.

“We applied it to my two children thinking it would look beautiful and cool and as soon as I put it on it didn’t crack, it squeaked.

“They were both screaming that it was burning, so I had to wash it quickly.”

Another person wrote: “I recently bought it, used it today and it felt nice, cool and refreshing on application.

“But after about 30 seconds it started to burn. Within 60 seconds I was in agony and had to use cold cloths to remove it and soothe the irritated skin.”

And a third said: “OMG it’s like your skin is on fire. I thought my boyfriend was exaggerating, until I applied it to myself.”

Others described the burning as “painful” and “like pouring acid on your skin”, adding that their children were also left “screaming in pain”.

It’s also like “putting TCP on an open wound” and “spraying pepper on your cheeks,” according to separate reviews.

Many purchased the product on its own, but some received it as part of a Love Island beauty box.

Boots has now withdrawn the mousse, which costs £5 and comes in 150ml bottles, from sale online and in stores.

A spokesperson said: “We continually listen to our customers and take their feedback very seriously.

“For this reason, we have decided to withdraw Soltan Soothe & Cool Crackling Aftersun Mousse from sale.

“While we have the utmost confidence in the rigorous safety assessments that have been carried out on the product, we are concerned about some of the comments we have received.

2We would like to thank customers for sharing their feedback with us and we are sorry to those who were disappointed.”

How to Care for Sunburn Safely

We should all avoid burning in the sun, as it can cause skin cancer.

But if you do get sunburned this summer, it’s important to take care of your skin safely.

Your skin will likely feel hot to the touch, sore and sore, and will peel or flake after a few days. If the burn is severe, your skin may also blister.

According to the NHS, the best ways to relieve sunburn are:

  • Get out of the sun as often as possible
  • Cool skin with a cool shower, bath, or damp towel (be careful not to let a baby or child get too cold)
  • Apply after-sun cream or spray
  • Drink plenty of water to cool down and avoid dehydration
  • Take pain relievers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen for any pain
  • Cover sunburned skin from direct sunlight until the skin is completely healed

You should also avoid using petroleum jelly, placing ice or ice packs directly on sunburned skin, popping blisters, scratching, or trying to remove peeling skin and tight clothing.

Most of the time, sunburn can be treated at home. But you should make an urgent doctor appointment or call 111 if you’ve been out in the sun and:

  • Your skin is blistered or swollen
  • Your temperature is too high or you feel hot and shaky
  • You feel very tired, dizzy and sick
  • You have a headache and muscle cramps
  • Your baby or young child has sunburn

Severe sunburn can cause heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be very serious and, in some cases, fatal.
