A MAN underwent a life-changing transformation after surgeons removed a huge 15-pound tumor growing on his scalp in a complex 10-hour operation.

Rabindra Bisui, 51, from West Bengal, lived with the tumor for 25 years before surgeons were able to rid him of it.

The small growth rapidly increased in size in the seven months prior to Rabindra’s operation, reaching a staggering 15.43 pounds and severely impacting her moving, working and carrying out daily activities.

The 51-year-old’s tumor was synovial sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that tends to grow around joints in the arms and legs, such as the knees and elbows.

This is thought to be caused by certain chromosomes — the parts inside cells that contain DNA — being broken and reassembled in the wrong way, according to Sarcoma UK.

Removing the tumor posed a significant challenge to surgeons at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar due to its rarity and aggressive nature.

Several blood vessels also surrounded Rabindra’s tumor, making the operation especially complicated.

Dr. Sanjay Giri, head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar noted that “the tumor was exceptionally swollen and removing it from the scalp was risky.”

Due to the complex nature of the case, a multidisciplinary team of experts from various departments at AIIMS Bhubaneswar was required to remove it.

Specialists in neurosurgery, anesthesiology, interventional radiology and surgical oncology became involved.

During the challenging 10-hour procedure, surgeons worked hard to ensure that Rabindra’s skull bone remained intact.

The operation was a success and the surgeons were able to completely remove the tumor.

Rabindra expressed his gratitude to the medical team, likening them to guardian angels for saving his life.

Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, executive director, AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, praised the team’s success, noting how Rabindra was left with no post-operative complications.

“The tumor had been afflicting him for more than two decades.

“This achievement highlights the dedication and collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals,” the hospital said in a statement.

Only around 79 cases of synovial sarcoma are diagnosed each year in England.

Symptoms may vary depending on the size and location of the tumor.

You can try:

  • A lump or swelling in the soft tissues of the body under the skin, usually around the joints of the arms or legs
  • This lump is usually slow in onset and painful
