A SOUP and shake diet that can reverse type 2 diabetes is to be rolled out nationwide on the NHS after successful trials.

Weight-lossers on the radical one-year program are restricted to 900 calories or less for the first three months and typically lose two to three pounds.

Up to half of people with type 2 diabetes later go into remission and are able to stop their medication, reducing their risk of heart disease.

Health bosses want to sign up a further 50,000 patients over the next five years.

More than four million Britons have type 2 diabetes, with cases rising in line with obesity rates.

Amanda Pritchard, CEO of NHS England, said: “This program could really change lives.

“Type 2 diabetes can have a devastating impact on many people and their families.

“This program can reduce their risk of significant health complications and help them stay well long-term.”

Dieters should stick to free soups, milkshakes, and replacement bars to keep their calorie intake low.

It was available in 21 local health boards in England, but will now be rolled out to all 42.

Patients from any area will be able to get it if they are between 18 and 65 years old, are overweight and have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the last six years.

After initial severe calorie restrictions, NHS health coaches help patients follow a healthy diet.

Colette Marshall, head of the charity Diabetes UK said: “We are delighted that the program has already helped thousands of people with weight loss and weight loss.

“This expansion means that many more people will benefit.

“Remission of type 2 diabetes can transform health and well-being and potentially reduce the risk of serious long-term complications.”

The NHS spends around 10% of its annual budget – around £10 billion – on treating diabetes.

The condition increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, cancer and dementia, as well as leg amputations and blindness.
