A TEENAGER was awarded £10,000 after a dentist allegedly left him unable to eat ice cream.

Toby Parker claims his “very painful” tooth extraction at age 15 could have been avoided if the cavity had been detected earlier.

The boy, from Stockport, Greater Manchester, had been visiting the same dentist for more than a decade.

He claims that although he applied a strong fluoride paste to several teeth, no cavities were ever identified or treated.

The true state of his oral health, he claims, was only discovered after his mother took him to another dental hospital in 2021, seeking a second opinion on whether he needed braces.

It was confirmed not to be the case, but the team discovered a number of issues that they said should have been addressed earlier.

“The hospital diagnosed decay in some of my teeth, which luckily was caught before it got worse,” said Toby, now 18.

“I also have hypomineralization, where the enamel on my teeth is soft and more prone to cavities than normal.

“They advised a suitable treatment plan to extract one of my teeth as well as filling three others.”

This was “very painful” and left Toby and his parents extremely frustrated as they felt it could have been avoided.

The Dental Law Partnership (DLP) review concluded that Toby’s tooth decay should have been detected and treated in 2018.

The law firm claimed this led to significant deterioration of the young man’s teeth and the loss of the one he had pulled out.

“Now I’m missing a tooth that I should have had for the rest of my life,” Toby said.

“It’s irritating and now my teeth are so sensitive I can’t eat cold things like ice cream.

“But the most important thing is the shock of it all and the disappointment at the mistakes the dentist made at a crucial moment in my life, especially after the trust I placed in him as a child.

“It really isn’t pleasant when you find out that the person you trusted for years has let you down, and now I’m scared to go back to the dentist.”

Poppy Heslop, from the DLP, said: “The anguish and pain our client experienced was completely unnecessary.

“If the dentist involved had provided more satisfactory treatment, his problems could have been avoided.”

The company took Toby’s case in 2021 and it was successfully resolved out of court in February 2024.

The dentist involved did not admit liability.
