Cruz was put to bed but died in his sleep

His death in May this year left his family devastated.

The boy’s aunt, Siobhan, launched a gofundme page to help with funeral expenses.

She wrote: “Our hearts are broken following the sudden and heartbreaking loss of my nephew, Cruz.

“At just five years old, Cruz was a beacon of love and light, a warrior who filled our lives with joy and laughter.

“He was a healthy boy who slept one night and never woke up. He had no previous illnesses, injuries or warning signs.”

Cruz is believed to have died as a result of SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood). SUDC leaves families with unimaginable pain.

His aunt added: “In the midst of our grief, we also face the harsh reality of the financial burden that comes with giving Cruz
the farewell he deserved.

“My brother and sister-in-law are not only facing the overwhelming grief of losing their son, but also caring for their other two children, while my brother is unable to return to work due to the loss.

“I can’t bear to watch my family silently struggle with this pain. That’s why I’m here, humbly asking for your support.

“Every donation, no matter the size, will go a long way to easing the financial pressure on my brother and his family during this incredibly difficult time.

“Your generosity will provide some comfort and relief to a grieving family.”

What is sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC)?

SUDC is a category of death in children aged one to 18 years.

It applies to deaths that remain unexplained after a thorough investigation, including an autopsy.

Most of the time, a seemingly healthy child falls asleep and never wakes up.

Experts believe this happens to one in every 100,000 children.

But they don’t know what causes it, which means it’s impossible to predict or prevent.
