AAn Ohio company that sells cucumbers in three Midwestern states issued a voluntary recall Tuesday, citing possible listeria contamination.

The products, whole cucumbers with a package date of June 5, 2024, and bagged salad cucumbers with a package date of June 5, 2024 and June 6, 2024, were sold by Wiers Farm Inc. and distributed at Walmarts in Indiana , Michigan and Ohio.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a to perceive on behalf of the Ohio-based company on July 16, announcing the recall. According to the release, potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination was discovered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) through routine sampling.

According to FDAWhen Listeria monocytogenes is consumed, “it can cause listeriosis, a disease to which pregnant women and their unborn children are very susceptible.”

Symptoms of listeriosis may include fever, chills, muscle aches, diarrhea or stomach pain, headache, stiff neck, confusion and loss of balance. Additionally, pregnant women are about 10 times more likely to get listeriosis than other healthy adults.

Most of the time, pregnant women infected with listeriosis do not feel sick. However, they can transmit the infection to their fetuses without even knowing it.

So far, there have been no reports of illnesses or consumer complaints related to the cucumber recall. The notice advised consumers to discard the products, which, according to them, had already passed their expiration date.

“Wiers Farm operates in accordance with the highest health and food safety standards,” the company said in the release. “We took immediate action to resolve this isolated incident and are collaborating closely with the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) to ensure a swift resolution.”

It was a tough year for cucumbers. Last month, Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. recalled whole cucumbers shipped to 14 states from May 17 to May 21 because they may have been contaminated with salmonella. Eventual the tests would yield that some actually tested positive for salmonella.

In the original notice from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released in early June, the agency said it had received reports of 162 people falling ill with salmonella, linked to recalled cucumbers, in 25 states and Washington, D.C., among March 11th and May 16th. Of these 162 people, at least 54 were hospitalizedsaid the CDC.

Now, that statistic has increased to 449 people falling ill, although no deaths have been reported.

Last week, Melissa Milligan, a Florida woman, filed a lawsuit against Fresh Start Produce Sales, as well as Bedner Growers Inc., which grew cucumbers during the salmonella outbreak, under allegations of strict liability, violation of warranty and negligence.

According to complaintMilligan purchased cucumbers from the Publix Super Markets at the Shoppes at Murabella in St. Augustine, Florida, on two separate occasions, and after eating the cucumbers, she began to experience symptoms consistent with a salmonella infection.

At the FDA last update On July 2, the agency shared the results of its investigation into the salmonella outbreak, stating that the same type of salmonella that caused part of the outbreak was also found in the canal’s untreated water used by Bedner’s producers.

They also said the company’s cucumber season has ended and therefore “there is no product from this farm on the market and there is likely no ongoing risk to the public.”
