All junior doctors offered 22% pay rise over 2 years in bid to end NHS strike chaos

JUNIOR doctors will be offered a huge 22.3% pay rise over the next two years in a surprise attempt to end NHS strikes.

Rachel Reeves will confirm ministers’ latest pay proposal this afternoon, alongside announcing pay rises for military personnel, dentists and teachers.

Under a new agreement between Health Secretary Wes Streeting and the British Medical Association, junior doctors would receive a retroactive pay rise of 4.05 per cent for 2023-24, alongside an existing increase of between 8.1 per cent one hundred and 10.3 percent.

They could then receive a further 6% increase for 2024-25, along with a £1,000 consolidated payment.

The total package would cost taxpayers around £1 billion.

It will be put to a vote among BMA members, with the expectation, but no absolute guarantee, of approval.

The Union barons have demanded increases of 35%.

Industrial action by the NHS since December 2022 has led to the postponement of 1.5 million operations, procedures and appointments.

The strikes cost the health service a staggering £3 billion.

Meanwhile, nurses are expected to see pay packages increase by 5.5 percent, destroying inflation.

And experienced doctors and dentists will receive a 6% raise.

It comes as the Chancellor today warns of “difficult choices” – as he prepares the nation for sweeping tax raids.

Reeves will promise to “fix the foundations of our economy” and accuse former PM Rishi Sunak of “covering up” the dire state of the public finances.

It will reveal the findings of an investigation into the Treasury’s coffers which is expected to reveal a £20 billion black hole in the national budget.

And after setting a date for the Autumn Budget, Ms Reeves will promise a new crackdown on public sector waste.

Mandarins are believed to be eyeing a rise in inheritance and capital gains taxes this autumn to boost coffers.

PM Sir Keir Starmer promised VAT, income tax and national tax safe won’t rise to that parliament.
