The heat is finally on.
After weeks of rain and stormy weather, we are now enjoying the glorious sunshine.
But the sudden heat can sometimes be a little too much.
Grace Macaskill brings you our top tips for staying cool. . .
1. Eat water: Cucumbers and tomatoes are 95% water, so increase your fluid intake with these healthy snacks.
2. Get wet: Experts say soaked clothing releases heat in the same way as sweat.
3. On Ice: Use ice cubes to rub pulse points on your body: wrists and neck, inner elbows, knees, and tops of feet.
4. Keep Children: Scientists estimate that children suffer when the mercury reaches 32ºC and time outdoors should be limited to that temperature.
Anything above that, they’re better off staying indoors.
5. Get your feet wet: Take a cold bowl of water and dip your feet in it.
Feet and ankles are “impact zones” that, when cooled, can lower body temperature.
6. Be wary of ice cream: It may not seem like anything nicer in the heat than a tasty soft spoon cone, but scientists urge caution.
They say that as the treat contains milk, fat and sugar, the body uses a lot of energy to consume it – leaving you feeling hotter.
Try sugar-free lollipops.
7. Wear a hat: So take it off! A hat can protect you from the sun, but it also keeps you warm, so don’t forget to take a break from wearing hats while in the shade.
8. Curtain Call: Keep blinds and curtains closed all day, especially those facing the sun.
Open them in the evening after the sun sets.
9. Don’t be in a hurry to open the windows: It can be hotter outside than indoors.
Only open the windows when it’s cold outside.
And whenever possible, also open them on opposite sides of the house to try to create a breeze.
10. Spicy Idea: It may seem counterintuitive to eat spicy food, but it helps in hot weather.
The capsaicin in chili peppers, for example, makes you sweat more easily, releasing body heat.
11. Don’t mess with: TikTokers have been promoting the use of ice cubes hanging from fans to cool a room.
Avoid this unless you want to short out your home’s electricity.
12. Eat Smartly: Eat light meals so that your body does not generate energy – and heat – by consuming huge dishes.
13. Dress well: Use light colors to reflect the sun and opt for natural fibers like cotton that “breathe” more easily.
Loose-fitting styles can be more comfortable in the heat.
14. Change your exercise routine: There’s nothing stopping you from training when it’s hot, but it’s better to opt for a gym with air conditioning or even go swimming.
If you enjoy being outdoors, exercise during the cooler part of the day, i.e. early in the morning or evening.
