A mother claims dental implants have left her face with the “worst bruises ever” – leaving her looking “like a monster”.

Jessica Macko was working because an eating disorder she had when she was younger had “eaten away” all of her teeth.

The 44-year-old decided to get full dental implants early to correct her ongoing dental problems.

The procedure involves inserting a set of four dental implants to replace an entire arch of “loose, rotten, missing or defective teeth.”

Although she was warned by doctors about bruising, the stay-at-home mom admits she didn’t expect the pain to be so “brutal” nor for the bruises to be so severe.

The model posted a video of her face four days after the treatment, saying she looked like a “monster” and asking others to contact her if they had a similar reaction.

The “horrible” deep purple bruise started on her neck and chin and spread across her face, getting worse by the hour, even reaching under her eyes.

Now, two weeks later, the bruising and swelling has reduced considerably.

I had no idea the pain would be so strong before I felt it. I didn’t understand the brutality of it

Despite her reaction, the mother of three said she would still recommend the procedure, believing her extreme bruising was a one-off.

Jessica, from San Antonio, Texas, USA, said: “The doctors said I would have some bruising.

“The day after the implants were placed, my face swelled up enormously and the bruising started the next day.

“I was very scared. It got worse and worse every hour.

“It looked like I had a Rorschach test on my face, like the inkblots.

“I tend to get injured a lot, but I’ve never experienced anything like this before.

“I’m an artist, so it was cool to watch, but it was horrible because I’d never seen bruises like that on anyone’s face.

“It was on my chin and neck, they were more swollen and then it spread and got to my nose and under my eyes. It practically covered my entire face below the eyes.

“It hurt a lot. For them to pull out like all your teeth, I think it just causes a lot of trauma, but I had no choice because I was having constant dental pain.

“I had no idea the pain would be so strong before I felt it. I didn’t understand the brutality of it.”

Jessica’s dental problems began when she was younger due to an eating disorder.

I couldn’t sleep or eat, I only cried at night

Jessica said: “I liked the cosmetic result, but for me it was medical.

“When I was younger, I had a serious eating disorder that ate away at my teeth.

“Luckily I’m healthy now and doing better, but part of getting the new teeth was my healing process.

“My teeth were practically failing due to some health issues and I was in agonizing pain.”

How can eating disorders affect your teeth?

According to Oral Health FoundationEating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder can impact your oral health.

“The potential negative effects of vitamin and nutrient deficiencies can cause the body to shut down and not function properly and this will also be reflected in the mouth,” he explained.

He said oral signs of eating disorders include:

  • Enamel erosion
  • Dry mouth
  • Enlarged salivary glands
  • Chapped and dry lips
  • Canker sores
  • Dental cavity
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Bruises and/or injuries to the mouth

Those who purge through vomiting can also erode tooth enamel through excessive contact with stomach acid.

For the four tooth implant procedure, dentists inserted two screws into Jessica’s upper and lower jaw to anchor rows of teeth.

“In the first week I couldn’t sleep or eat, I only cried at night”, remembers the mother.

“I immediately went back to my doctor when the bruise appeared.

“He explained that there was always a possibility and said he had seen a worse person.

“I’m also anemic so that could make the bruising worse and obviously because it’s a lot of trauma to the area it’s not unheard of.”

Despite the bruises, which she believes were made worse by anemia, Jessica has no regrets about the surgery and would encourage others to have it.

Jessica said: “It’s gotten a lot better now. I went to MAC and did makeup to cover the bruises. I think it should be completely healed by the end of the month.

“My advice to other people who are thinking about getting dental implants is that it is a great option, it helps a lot of people and I would definitely recommend it and that my case was unique.

“I would 100 percent recommend surgery.”

Online, Bupa UK describes the treatment: “The Smile in a day treatment is a long-lasting solution to replacing loose, rotting, missing or deficient teeth with a full set of dental implants in one day.

“The technique is usually used for people with few or no teeth and is an alternative to the traditional placement of multiple dental implants or a complete set of dentures.

“A set of four to six dental implants replaces an entire arch of missing teeth and are usually installed on the same day.

“You can also hear the smile in a daytime treatment called Teeth in a Day, Full Mouth Dental Implants or All-On-Four Dental Implants.”
