First lady Jill Biden said former President Trump is “dangerous” to the LGBTQ+ community, criticizing her husband’s main general election rival at Pittsburgh’s annual Pride festival on Saturday.

Biden, in addition to going after Trump, spoke about the advances that the LGBTQ+ community has made, but also warned about the challenges that still lie ahead.

“Donald Trump is a bully,” Biden said while in Allegheny Commons Park, according to The Attorney. “He is dangerous to the LGBTQ+ community, to our families, to our country, and we cannot let him win. We must face this moment as if our fundamental rights were at stake, because they are. We have to face this moment as if our democracy were at stake, because it is.”

Biden, who earlier in the day addressed graduates of Erie County Community College, reflected on the importance of coming together every June to celebrate the progress made by the LGBTQ+ community. She also mentioned areas where more work needs to be done.

“It shouldn’t take courage to go to school and walk the halls like the person you know you are, to hold someone’s hand on the bus, to kiss them goodbye on the sidewalk,” she said Saturday. “But in many places this still happens.”

Biden’s presence in Pennsylvania and comments at the festival are another attempt to woo voters ahead of the November election in a swing state that her husband won by about 80,000 votes in 2020. Although President Biden has recently struggled in the polls ahead ahead against Trump, the first lady said she is optimistic that the polls will turn in her favor as the campaign progresses and voter interest increases closer to the race.

“We’re going to meet people where they are,” she said Wednesday. “I’ve been traveling every day, Joe has been traveling as much as possible and we’re not going to take anything for granted, and these polls are going to change, I’m sure of that.”
