LGBTQ Americans Coming Out Earlier in Life: Gallup

LGBTQ people are coming out at a younger age, according to a new Gallup pollwith many citing greater social acceptance of the queer community in the last decade.

Among gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender adults and other non-heterosexual or cisgender respondents, more than two-thirds – 71% – said they had shared their identity with others before age 30. He did this before he was 22.

Respondents in the lowest age group – between 18 and 29 years old – left even earlier, with an average age of 17 years old.

A small number of respondents said they came out later in life, at age 50 or older. Eighteen percent said they had not revealed anything to anyone.

The survey also found that the majority of respondents accepted their sexuality or gender identity during adolescence. Nearly half – 48% – said they knew they were LGBTQ by age 14, and 72% reported coming to the realization by the time they turned 18.

The findings reflect changing attitudes toward LGBTQ individuals, something most respondents agreed has improved in recent years.

A separation Gallup poll in June found that more than two-thirds of Americans – 69% – said they believe same-sex marriage should be legal. And 64 percent said they think gay and lesbian relationships are “morally acceptable.”

Additionally, 70 percent of adults in Friday’s survey said that social acceptance and treatment of LGBTQ people has “greatly improved” or “somewhat improved” over the past 10 years, although about a quarter of LGBTQ adults said who received inadequate treatment. or “frequently” or “occasionally” harassed you in the last year because of your sexual orientation.

More than 500 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced this year in state legislatures, according to the American Civil Liberties Unionwhile the FBI’s latest crime report revealed a sharp increase in the number of reported LGBTQ hate crimes.
