A SAM’S Club shopper was left humiliated after discovering a mysterious box of biscuits in her trolley.
The customer was stopped by an employee who noticed the item had not been scanned.
Shanna Payne took to social media to share the embarrassing story.
“My daughter took some cookies last time and I didn’t notice and the scanner picked it up,” Payne explained on Facebook.
“I was so embarrassed when the lady stopped me because it wasn’t scanned.
“Count your items before paying! Especially if you have children with you,” she said.
Payne shared this story in response to a shopper’s post about Sam’s Club’s new scanners.
The retailer introduced artificial intelligence scanning technology in some stores in January 2024.
After customers pay, computer vision and digital technology take photos of customers’ carts to verify payment as they leave the store.
Sam’s Club plans to implement these AI scanners in all of its nearly 600 U.S. stores by the end of the year.
So far, more than 120 stores have launched these scanners.
The scanners are intended to prevent shoplifting, as well as speed up checkout times and eliminate receipt checks.
For Shanna Payne, this technology saved her from taking home an unscanned item.
And it appears other shoppers have faced similar experiences.
“I accidentally didn’t scan a watermelon – I counted the items and thought I was right – I got caught and felt like a criminal!” another buyer said.
“I would never intentionally try to steal – this thing works!”

Customers seem to be fans of this updated checkout system – they are excited about it.
For some stores, this means receipt checks are eliminated, leaving customers very happy.
“It was great going to Sam’s Club today. I didn’t have to show a receipt. They said I was good to go,” one said.
“I already like the scan and go feature. It’s the best thing ever!” another wrote.
MIXED OPINIONS
Others, however, were less enthusiastic about the system.
“Mine has this, but they still stand at the end and scan everyone’s receipts,” wrote one frustrated customer.
“Ours has it now and we still have to wait in line for them to scan the receipts and things we bought,” said another customer.
Although scanners were introduced to eliminate receipt checks, it appears that not all stores have taken advantage of this advantage.
