A COSTCO shopper is fed up with the store’s new membership policy, which has caused him to miss out on $100 in rewards.

The client said she suffered a huge loss when she changed her family card from her daughter to her son.

“So I changed my additional card from my daughter’s family member to my son’s and the accumulated reward in my daughter’s account was lost around 100 dollars,” the buyer posted on Reddit.

The Costco customer attached a screenshot of an employee’s response when asked about a refund.

“Only purchases made by the primary and primary cardholder active on the account will be applied to the reward; when you remove someone, you lose the rewards accrued with your membership number,” the employee told the shopper.

“Ah, so this reward is not recoverable”, asked the customer.

“Correct,” said the employee.

Redditters supported the employee’s statement and spoke about similar experiences they had.

“I believe this is correct,” commented one Costco insider.

“When I went to remove someone last year, the associate kindly told me about this rule and advised that I wait until the beginning of the new year so as not to lose that person’s rewards, as they were significantly greater than mine.”

CHANGES AT COSTCO

Costco shoppers have been posting on social media about their frustrations with the changes at the store.

The store recently implemented limb scanners in some locations.

“Once deployed, before entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code on the scanner,” a description of the scanners to read.

If guests want to shop, they must be accompanied by an associate to enter the store.

The retailer also enthusiastically mentioned that there will always be an attendant at the door to answer any questions or concerns.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

Those with inactive or expired memberships will need to go to a membership desk for assistance before opening the door.

Anyone without a photo on their card must present a valid photo ID to prove they are the member owner.

The scanners have already begun to be used at locations in Huntington Beach and Inglewood, California, per Fox affiliate KTLA.

Buyers did not take this new system lightly.

Many have criticized the company for its new prison-like system as employees chase customers for their membership cards.

“I’ve found that shopping at Costco has become an increasingly unpleasant experience,” wrote one TikTok user.

“You can’t buy a hot dog without them reading your card, and I don’t know how having to scan your card the first time, like it’s some kind of prison badge, is going to make this experience any better.”

Costco Membership Scanners

Costco has unveiled membership scanners at its store entrances.

In August 2024, the retailer released a statement regarding the scanners in its website.

“In the coming months, limb scanning devices will be used at the front door of your local grocery store,” he wrote.

“Once deployed, before entering, all members must scan their physical or digital membership card by placing the barcode or QR Code on the scanner.

“Guests must also be accompanied by a valid member to enter.

“If you have any questions or concerns, there will always be an attendant at the door to assist you!

“If your membership is inactive, expired, or if you want to sign up for a new membership, the attendant will ask you to stop by the membership desk before entering the warehouse to shop.

“Also, if your membership card does not have a photo, be prepared to show your valid photo ID.

“We encourage you to stop by the membership desk to take a photo to put on your card.”
