Grab your wallet because coin expert Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) shared how to tell if your $2 bill is worth anything.

“This $2 bill behind me netted someone over $1,000,” began the expert in one video from Wednesday.

He highlighted that the note was not in the best condition, with a large crease in the middle, as well as other fold marks.

Miller said that despite its poor condition, the $2 bill was valuable because of its serial number.

The serial number of the note was L 00000008.

“Because it has so many zeros and the last number is an eight, it’s a low – very low – serial number,” he said.

Miller highlighted that the note was also a star note, saying that the star symbol is typically the first thing people notice.

Regular $2 star bills sell for about $8 to $12.

Although the star symbol increased the rarity of the note, its true value came from its serial number.

Due to the low serial number, the $2 bill sold for $1,631 at auction on June 26, 2024.

I found a ‘normal’ gold coin in my cash drawer at work – an expert said if I flip it over and find an eagle it will cost $120,000

The note also had a lot of interest, with 23 bids.

“You need to check all your $2 bills for this — it’s a huge sale,” Miller said.

STAR APPEAL

Another $1 bill sold for a whopping $30,000 thanks to its star symbol.

On a YouTube shortthe Treasure City (@TreasureTownShorts) warned viewers to check their $1 bills as a “common-looking” bill sold for $29,900 in 2008.

One dollar quickly turned into thousands thanks to a discrepancy in the two serial numbers on the front of the bill.

The note featured a starred note on the left side and an unstarred serial number on the right side.

What is a star rating?

Starred banknotes indicate replacement banknotes and are used to replace incorrectly printed or damaged coins.

These notes resemble regular paper money, but feature a star symbol at the end of the serial number instead of a letter.

Most replacement notes feature two star notes – one on the right side of the note and one on the left.

Banknotes with two star ratings can be valuable due to their rarity, but misprints with just one star rating are even more valuable.

The rarity of a starred note also depends on the number of notes printed during the print run and put into circulation, as well as the condition of the note.

The YouTuber highlighted how valuable the note was based on its worn condition.

“You can see a fold there,” he said, noting the three folds visible on the note.

“So someone literally took it out of their pocket and people still paid about $30,000.”

Coins can also sell for much more than their face value, with a quarter selling for more than $8,000 thanks to two important details.

A half dollar also sold for $7,000 – check it out for a “special” detail and two other important features.
