Walmart managed to reach 16.6% market share in 2023, barely surpassing Acme’s 15.7% share, according to Chain Store Guide.

This is the second year in a row that data shows shoppers prefer the big box retailer.

Over the past year, Walmart has been making serious changes across the country to take the top spot.

Following customer complaints about long lines, Walmart made the executive decision to remove self-checkout registrations from certain locations.

Spokesman Brian Little explained the Business Insider about the changes explaining that they were made to benefit customers.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the opportunity to provide more personalized and efficient service,” he said.

“We continually look for ways to provide our customers with the best shopping experience, and that includes adjusting the checkout area in stores,” said Walmart spokesman Josh Havens. Business Insider in September 2023.

“The decision was based on several factors, including feedback from associates and customers, purchasing patterns and business needs in this area.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the opportunity to provide more personalized and efficient service,” Little said, per KSDK.

Meanwhile, other retailers have struggled to understand customer needs.

The US Sun previously reported that Target also made a big change to its self-checkout policy.

Last month, the company announced it was limiting self-checkout to customers who have 10 items or fewer.

More lanes would be available during the store’s busiest times or when store leaders request it.

“We are opening more traditional avenues with our team associates in all of our stores for guests who have more in their Target carts, need help, or just like to connect with our team to help them get on their way sooner.” , read a press release.

“We also continue to invest in additional training to ensure our teams can continue to provide excellent service to guests during checkout.”

While the company said the new policy was “guided by customer feedback,” shoppers have been critical of the change.

“Don’t shop at Target,” one person wrote in response to a Facebook post announcing the change.

The outrage was also seen on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I think my self-checkout will be on Amazon instead of dealing with blocked items, long lines like Walmart now, and hard-to-track employees,” wrote former Target shopper Danny (@faneebo).
