A SHOPPER has criticized Walmart after the retailer decided to reverse a major self-checkout decision.

After years of implementing the service, Walmart’s move to remove self-checkout from some of its locations has left customers outraged.

Walmart announced last month that it was removing self-checkout from some of its locations to help improve customer satisfaction.

Spokesperson Brian Little spoke to Business Insider about the changes.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the opportunity to provide more personalized and efficient service,” he said.

However, many expressed their dissatisfaction with the decision.

“Lol This was not a good business move and poor customer service practice in the first place,” said one customer he wrote on Facebook.

The customer argued that self-checkout is for people trying to buy a few items quickly.

“Self-checkouts should only be used when a customer has fewer than 10 items.

“Expecting customers to stand in long lines, while some customers have a cart full of groceries and items, just to scan 1 or 2 items is ridiculous.”

Others expressed a similar sentiment, stating that removing the kiosks would delay the purchasing process.

“They won’t hire more people who don’t want to work and will have a nasty attitude as they will launch robots,” wrote one buyer.

“I actually like self-checkout because people [are] slow,” said another.

Little revealed that this was not a step the company took lightly.

“The decision was based on several factors, including feedback from associates and customers, purchasing patterns and business needs in this area,” Little said, per KSDK.

“We believe the change will improve the in-store shopping experience and give our associates the opportunity to provide more personalized and efficient service.”

ANGRY CUSTOMERS

A Walmart store in Cleveland, Ohio announced that it would be one of the stores that would remove self-checkout.

Those who frequent the store admit that this new change could be the reason why they no longer frequent the place.

“I’ll probably end up going to a different Walmart because I don’t like having to wait here,” Lean Burchnell, a shopper at the Cleveland store, told the ABC affiliate. WEWS-TV.

“Especially with all the crime that’s going on here. It’s very scary. It really is,” she added.

Those who shop there noted that the amount of crime that occurs often makes them feel unsafe.

Another shopper believes that even with the change, they didn’t think removing self-checkout would help the store.

“Last week, we were standing in the doorway while this guy was getting shocked for stealing a jacket and he had his pockets full of everything he could get his hands on, and I thought, ‘Wow,’” Cory Sheneman said.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.
