ONE man’s trash can be another man’s treasure, as many second-hand shoppers have discovered, including one who bought a popular vase worth thousands of dollars for just $25.

Thrifters and bargain hunters revealed their most valuable finds for the lowest cost in a Reddit thread called r/Antiques.

The thread started after a user asked the question“What’s the most valuable thing you’ve ever found at Goodwill?”

Goodwill Industries International Inc., commonly known simply as Goodwill, is a nonprofit organization in the United States that offers gently used clothing, furniture, and household items that are typically donated by other shoppers.

With thousands of locations across the country and Canada, Goodwill is known for selling high-quality items at extremely low prices compared to local stores or competitors.

In the Reddit thread, one user (u/EmilyofBlueMoon) shared that her big find was an ancient vase that was decades old.

“An 11-inch tall Moorcroft vase from the 1950s – the price was $25 but I had a 20% off coupon,” the user wrote.

“There was direct compensation of $1,500 online, but I kept it.”

Designs for Moorcroft pottery and vases were first released in 1897with the first pieces designed by William Moorcroft.

For decades, Moorcroft designs have been sought after by the rich, famous and royalty, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and Estée Lauder cosmetics president Leonard A Lauder.

Used Moorcroft ceramic vases can be found for as little as $100 on resale sites like EBay.

However, if you are thinking about purchasing a new vase, you may have to shell out up to $6,000 or more, depending on the size.

Found an old piece of paper at Goodwill – wasn’t 100% sure what we had, but the expert valued it at $18,000

In the Reddit thread, dozens of secondhand shoppers revealed their top finds, including items from designer brands or early edition novels.

“I found an old bowl that I paid $3 for from 1865 worth about $265, a pair of Christian Louboutin flats that I paid $5 for worth $400, 2 Gucci bags for $20 each worth of over $2,500 and a Burberry trench coat that I paid $50 for that was worth $800,” one user wrote.

“An old copy of Anna Karenina, from the same year as the first printing in English, but not the first edition. Sold for $195 + shipping,” said another.

“First edition of the communion of the rings. 5,600”, interrupted a third.

  2. The greatest good luck charm of all time: Largest pearl in the world valued at US$100 million

  5. BIlly the Kid Photobomb: Valued at US$5 million

For some, the value of the item was not in how much it cost, but where it came from.

“A carving made by my father in the 70s. I almost died when I saw it on a cart,” said a thrifty shopper.

The buyer said his father passed away in 2009 and he enjoyed carving wood as a hobby.

The piece they found at Goodwill reportedly hung in his home for years and has his signature on the back.

“He must have sold it at an arts and crafts show – he was a regular at those.

“This one had a companion piece that my mom found at the same thrift store a few days later. It felt like my father was with me again.”
