In August 2022, Connexin became aware that a third party had successfully accessed one of the company’s servers, according to the liquidation notice sent to students.

As a result, the personal information of patients and employees was compromised.

According to the class action lawsuit, the data breach compromised social security numbers, health insurance data, employment information and other identifying information.

It is believed that around three million people were affected by this breach and Connexin began sending warnings in December 2022.

The health records software provider has since been accused of failing to protect personal information that caused affected individuals to incur losses or other injuries.

To put an end to the litigation and resolve the lawsuit’s claims, Connexin Software agreed to a $4 million settlement.

In doing so, the company did not admit any wrongdoing.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members have two options.

They can get three years of free identity theft and fraud monitoring as a result of their data being compromised.

Or receive a one-time payment of up to $7,500 for losses incurred from the data breach.

Individuals who opt for the latter will have to prove losses related to the breach or accept an alternative payment in cash.

Accepted proof of loss includes receipts, invoices, bank statements and credit reports.

There are three important dates that eligible students need to be aware of.

Individuals will know if they are eligible as they will have received a notice from Connexin about the breach in December 2022.

Class members have until June 25 to opt out or oppose the preliminary settlement.

Those who opt out will retain their legal right to bring future claims against Connexin regarding the data breach.

What is a class action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or “classes,” a way to come together in court.

These lawsuits are often filed by one or a few people who allege that a company or other entity has harmed a large group of people.

When a lawsuit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar claims to those who filed the lawsuit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue legal action by accepting money.

These payment agreements often include statements from the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are some examples of what can lead to a class action lawsuit at a company’s door.

Individuals who fail to do so will lose this right, even if they do not take action and submit a claim form for this agreement.

On July 24th at 10am, the court will hold a final approval hearing on the settlement to ensure it is fair to all parties involved.

All claim forms must be submitted by July 25th, which can be done on the website settlement website.

Meanwhile, the deadline for a $385,200 privacy settlement payment is quickly approaching.
