Silva became the third winner of the $1 million Massachusetts State Lottery prize.

According to the state lottery website, the instant ticket game debuted on Tuesday, March 26.

Silva, a painter who has lived on Martha’s Vineyard for 18 years, bought the Tubarão ticket because of the novelty and the connection with the island where the film was shot.

Opting for a one-off payment meant he only managed to earn $650,000.

Silva claimed his prize on Friday, May 3, at the Mass Lottery headquarters in Dorchester.

His winning ticket, worth $1 million, was purchased at the Depot Market in Edgartown.

As a result of this sale, the store received a $10,000 bonus.

MORE THAN A PIECE OF CHANGE

Prizes won by Massachusetts citizens in lotteries, raffles, races, beano, or other chance-based activities are taxed at 5% plus a surcharge and are included in their gross income.

In the year the taxpayer receives the money or has the opportunity to receive it, the earnings are subject to taxes.

Prizes of up to $600 are deducted and forwarded to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

EVERGREEN US – Unclaimed Lottery Tickets

When a reward exceeds $5,000, the Internal Revenue Service receives 24% of the amount withheld, while the Massachusetts Department of Revenue receives 5% of the amount withheld.

This was the case of Silva, who won the US$1 million prize, but only went home with US$650,000, as the state withdrew US$350,000 of his winnings.

PENNY FOR YOUR JAWS

The Jaws instant ticket game even offers three additional instant jackpot prizes of $1 million each, says the Mass Lotto website.

It also features five second-chance sweepstakes, awarding a total of 30 lucky winners with a Shark-themed trip for two to Martha’s Vineyard in summer 2025.

During their stay on the Vineyard, all 30 winners will participate in a Jaws-themed Game Show, where one contestant is guaranteed to win a $1 million prize.

The remaining contestants will receive guaranteed prizes ranging from US$500 to US$10,000.

Trip winners are chosen at random from non-winning tickets submitted for the Second Chance Drawing.

Travel packages include, by Loteria de Massa:

  • Three-night stay for two at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown
