The sun is setting on McDonald’s self-serve soda machines as the restaurant officially announces its plans to phase them out.

A complete change isn’t expected to happen until 2032, although some McDonald’s locations are already getting rid of them and customers aren’t having it.

Self-serve soda machines have been a McDonald’s staple for 22 years, but recent reports indicate the restaurant may now be charging for refills.

And your customer base isn’t taking the news well.

Facebook users migrated to a post from News 4 Santo Antonio announcing the removal of the popular chain’s self-service drink machines.

“I’m sorry, but McDonald’s service has gone to waste,” one user wrote.

Meanwhile, others say changes like these are grounds for a total boycott.

“No, I won’t then!” said another. “Goodbye forever, McDonald’s isn’t worth it. I pay for my drink, I deserve free refills! Drinks are expensive as it is!”

“Boycott,” said one user.

“Another good reason not to go to McDonald’s,” wrote another.

Although some may support the change, claiming it will help customers reduce their sugar cravings.

Well, all restaurants need to do this,” one user commented, citing things like free refills as a reason for customers being overweight.

McDonald’s is set to make changes that will affect 150 million customers – they say it will improve the way people order food

Meanwhile, others say the focus is on the wrong McDonald’s device.

“They should remove the ice cream machine because it’s always broken!” wrote one user.

McDonald’s previously told The US Sun that “the change is being implemented over 10 years and is intended to create a consistent experience for customers and crew across all ordering points, whether McDelivery, the app, kiosk, drive-thru or at the restaurant.”

RESTAURANTS FOLLOWING THE EXERCISE

McDonald’s isn’t the only fast food chain that says no to self-service.

Panera launched a new policy earlier this year that prohibits customers from serving themselves lemonade or refilling it themselves.

More changes at McDonald’s

McDonald’s is undergoing a series of changes — from new menu items to nationwide price adjustments

Menu items:

Surprise menu additions include two new variations on the popular McCrispy – a fried chicken sandwich with crinkle-cut pickles and applewood-smoked bacon on a buttered potato roll.

Two new additions include McCrispy Cajun Ranch Bacon and McCrispy Cajun Ranch Deluxe Bacon, available for a limited time. They come with crinkle-cut pickles and a creamy Cajun ranch dressing. The deluxe version adds shredded lettuce and Roma tomatoes.

McDonald’s also launched the Double Big Mac, with four burgers stacked between three buns.

Each burger is topped with finely diced onion, melted cheese, pickles, shredded lettuce and Big Mac sauce. The sandwich made its limited debut once in 2020, before the pandemic, but was criticized for its sauce-to-patty ratio.

Price increases:

McDonald’s joined Chipotle in saying prices would rise for consumers as fast food wages hit $20 in California.

The price increases were confirmed in an earnings call last fall, though it’s not yet clear which items will be affected or when customers will see them.

This has also led local small businesses to raise their wages to compete with fast-food restaurants.

But the change occurred for entirely different reasons.

With several lawsuits against it, the company removed self-service stations for its Charged Lemonade, which were linked to several health problems and deaths.

Additionally, a TikTok falsely spread the rumor that KFC customers would receive free refills on their chicken buckets if they ate it all within an hour.

KFC clarified to The US Sun that it does not offer free refills.
