Roper St. Francis Healthcare, a nonprofit healthcare provider, is involved in a lawsuit for allegedly failing to prevent a 2020 data breach.

The company did not admit wrongdoing but agreed to pay $1.5 million to resolve the claims.

Class members include those who were informed that their information could have been exposed in the breach.

Incident notifications were sent in January 2021.

A third party is believed to have gained unauthorized access to three company employee email accounts, potentially containing private patient information.

The information may have exposed approximately 190,000 people.

The plaintiffs argued that the company could have prevented the breach by taking sensible cybersecurity measures.

The Roper St. Francis system is comprised of four hospitals, six emergency rooms and 117 facilities.

The company is based in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina, along the coast.

PAYMENTS

Based on the terms of the settlement, eligible class members may receive a payment of up to $325 for expenses relevant to the data compromise, including bank fees and credit charges.

For class members who spent a lot of time dealing with the implications of the data breach, the settlement offers an additional $20 per hour for up to four hours of lost time.

Those eligible can also receive up to $3,250 for major data breach losses, including fraudulent charges and identity theft damages.

Documentation such as account statements, bills, receipts or invoices is required.

All class members can opt to receive one year of free credit monitoring services.

What is a class action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or “classes,” a way to come together in court.

These lawsuits are often filed by one or a few people who allege that a company or other entity has harmed a large group of people.

When a lawsuit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar claims to those who filed the lawsuit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue legal action by accepting money.

These payment agreements often include statements from the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are some examples of what can lead to a class action lawsuit at a company’s door.

Members must submit a complaint form until May 30th to receive your payment.

It is too late to delete or contest the deal as the deadline was April 30th.

The final approval hearing has been scheduled for May 2.

You may be entitled to money from other settlements.

It’s the last few days to claim a payout of up to $1,200 from a $9.75 million data breach settlement – you must meet all three criteria.

Plus, a one-time $7,000 payment on a $1.45 million settlement will expire soon and all you need is a bank statement.
