The U.S. Postal Service advised Americans to upgrade their mailboxes — and pay the price.

The USPS has announced that it wants Americans to switch to wider and taller boxes to accommodate packages.

Citing the rise of e-commerce giants like Amazon, the USPS said people should “consider upgrading to one of the newer, higher-capacity boxes.”

The push came as part of what the federal agency calls “Mailbox Improvement Week.”

This happens the third week of May each year, the USPS said.

Postal officials said the goal is to “encourage box-on-delivery customers to examine and, where necessary, improve the appearance of their mailboxes.”

Now, that includes replacing them with “jumbo” mailboxes.

Wide boxes are available at many retailers, but some cost more than $100.

Some options listed at Home Depot sell for around $60.

Going postal

USPS customers questioned the request.

A user X shared his frustration in a tweet.

“Drivers are too lazy to take packages to the door,” she said. “Infuriating!”

Others responded to a tweet about the huge mailboxes by CBS.

“Is it because they don’t want to go to the front door?” they asked. “Just a guess.”

“While we’re doing that, can they deliver regular mail consistently?” one joked.

Another said he simply didn’t want a new mailbox.

“I don’t want to go out and buy a new mailbox,” they said. “My little one is in good shape and will be fine.”

How to update

The Post Office suggested several places to get a jumbo box.

HAPPY HOLIDAY

The USPS recommended several other box changes during this Mailbox Improvement Week.

  • Replacing Loose Hinges
  • Repaint rusty mailboxes
  • Reassembling loose posts.
  • Replacing house numbers.

The Service says these changes can help ensure smooth delivery.

The USPS came under fire last month after announcing it would increase the price of a first-class stamp.

An 8% price increase will be implemented in July.

Last year, the service suffered an interruption just before Christmas.

The USPS is closed on select days of the week, including one this week.
