WALMART has confirmed its efforts to refund customers after some self-checkout users were overcharged for items.

The retail giant admitted to a technical glitch at 1,600 Walmart stores that led to a pricing problem earlier this year.

Some shoppers found that items they scanned at self-service kiosks cost more than the advertised price on the shelf, according to Bloomberg.

Thousands of products were affected, including food, clothing and technology.

The incident began on the evening of March 19 and lasted several days, but Walmart has not confirmed how long the outage lasted.

This issue occurred due to an internal system failure that did not allow price data to flow to self-checkouts.

A spokesperson for the retailer explained that the company has taken steps to correct the issue of overpayments for shoppers, according to the Online Mail.

“We make it a priority to refund customers who have been overcharged and take no action on undercharging our customers,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson added that the store has been working with affected customers since discovering the issue in March.

Despite this, Walmart did not disclose how many people were affected nor the total amount of refunds it distributed.

Walmart also did not disclose which products were affected by the technical issue.

The store revealed that more than 80% of overcharged customers were refunded after the technical issue was resolved, a spokesperson told Bloomberg.

SETTLE-MART

This self-checkout issue wasn’t the only problem the retailer faced this year.

The grocer had settled a class-action lawsuit that alleged some customers purchased heavy groceries for more than the store’s lowest price.

Walmart denied any wrongdoing but settled the lawsuit with a $45 million settlement fund for shoppers.

Affected customers could receive up to $500, but must act quickly.

What is a class action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or “classes,” a way to come together in court.

These lawsuits are often filed by one or a few people who allege that a company or other entity has harmed a large group of people.

When a lawsuit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar claims to those who filed the lawsuit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue legal action by accepting money.

These payment agreements often include statements from the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are some examples of what can lead to a class action lawsuit at a company’s door.

The last day to file a complaint is June 5th.

Possible payment depends on two factors: proof of purchase and how many affected products were purchased.

Affected buyers with a receipt or proof of purchase can receive up to $500.

Customers without a receipt would be entitled to significantly less money as they could receive up to $25.

Buyers should note that claims made without receipts are made under penalty of perjury.
