A book-obsessed businessman chartered a private jet to fly home a first edition he shelled out $1.5 million for – but is now under strict instructions from his wife not to buy any more.

Russell Brunson spent the exorbitant amount on a rare, signed pre-first edition of Napoleon Hill’s book The Law of Success.

The serial entrepreneur describes the 1925 book as “the Holy Grail” of business success, and when he saw it for sale in the eBayhe knew he needed it.

Facing another book enthusiast, the 44-year-old spent a month negotiating with the seller and convincing his wife, Collette Brunson, that he was worth the money.

After a stressful wait, the father of five was delighted to learn he had secured the book, along with a collection of Napoleon Hill’s other works, in October 2020, for a total of $2.2 million.

Determined not to let the text rot under lock and key, Russell Brunson carefully took it home on a private jet and now promises to use it as a tool to “wake up” and educate aspiring entrepreneurs.

‌Given its expensive history, Brunson, who can recite portions of the book by heart, believes it will catch people’s attention and “increase its perceived value.”

However, he claims his full-time mother Collette, 49, was less impressed and “rolled her eyes”.

She joked that he was crazy and encouraged him not to spend so much on a book again.

Brunson, of Boise, Idahosaid: “It’s by far one of the biggest purchases I’ve made in my life.

“It’s the Holy Grail of business success and personal development. He was the first to write about these principles.

“Most of the things you hear today from all the self-help gurus online are just regurgitations of what originally came from this book.

“It’s the only complete signed copy, when I saw it I thought, ‘Oh, that would be so cool to have.’

“I spoke to the guy who was selling it and ‘someday my goal is to buy this, so get ready for me.’

“He said he had another buyer looking at it. I thought, ‘Oh no, if I’m ever going to achieve this, that day needs to be now.’

“My wife Collette rolled her eyes when she realized I had spent so much on a book.

“She thinks I’m crazy for most of the things I do, but she also trusts me, and it wouldn’t hurt our family or our finances or anything like that, so she was fine with it.

“She jokingly warned me: ‘No more big book purchases.’ She doesn’t mind the little ones, but the big ones stress her out a little.”

The book will be the centerpiece of Brunson’s $25 million events center and museum, and he hopes the author’s lessons will be more valued as they come from a more expensive book.

Brunson, who is also the co-founder of ClickFunnels, added: “If I said, ‘I bought The Law Of Success for $500 on eBay, and if I try and share that message with them now, they probably wouldn’t listen.

“If I tell them, ‘I spent $1.5 million on this book,’ now they listen. Now that increases the perceived value of what I’m teaching in the book.

“The story behind it helps a lot because now everyone pays attention.

“When they come to our offices they want to see it, they want to take a picture with it, they care about what’s inside now because of the perceived value.”

What is Nepoleon Hill’s law of success?

The Law of Success was originally published by Napoleon Hill in 1928.

  • Oliver Napoleon Hill was a renowned self-improvement author born in Pound, Virginiaon October 26, 1883.
  • Hill is best known for his book Think and Grow Rich, which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time.
  • In The Law of Success, Hill covers 16 lessons, symbolizing everything a common man needs to know to succeed in difficult economic times.
  • The lessons come from research and interviews with more than 500 of the most successful entrepreneurs of the time.
  • The interviews are believed to include chats with giant millionaires such as Henry Ford, JP Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison.

The book, housed in a specially made light and temperature-controlled box, is currently stored in a safe at an off-site location before being moved to its new home.

Brunson said: “It was really cool to hold it in my hands for the first time, but I was so scared it would break.

“I love the smell of old books, so I was smelling it and opened it, and seeing his signature inside was amazing.

“I thought to myself, ‘100 years from now, I hope someone looks at my work the same way I’m looking at it.’

“I was really excited about it, it was a really cool experience.

“It is stored in an off-site location in a safe.

“We are building a museum that will be its final location; we hope that within a year this will be finished and people will have the opportunity to see and experience it.

“I’m big on creating experiences for people.

“Having a defined purpose, building a mastermind group, over-delivering on every thing we do – these are the qualities we try to instill in all our entrepreneurs and get them to truly buy in.

“Just these three, not to mention the others, can change someone’s life and relationship.”
