The new policy is expected to come into force in January 2025, which means that books will only be sold between September and December, for The New York Times.

Books are stored differently than other items in warehouses as they are not on pallets.

Workers carefully arrange different genres of books into displays for customers.

Publications are delivered weekly to warehouses and Costco must return unsold books.

The retailer has previously stopped selling books in stores in Hawaii and Alaska, but the policy will soon become more widespread.

News of Costco’s plans went viral and was not well received by all shoppers.

“The main reason I joined Costco,” one shouted.

Fans said the books for sale were great for shoppers on a budget compared to Barnes and Noble bookstores.

“I love the children’s book selections,” said another.

“Great variety at decent prices. I will miss them at Costco as I have bought books there that I don’t see at my local bookstore.

“Literally my favorite part of going to Costco,” lamented a third fan.

Shoppers recalled how they got hooked on novels they found at their local Costco warehouse.

One of them told how they explored the book section as a break during a shopping trip.

“I ended up gravitating toward a little book called The Alchemist,” they said.

“I begged my mother to buy it and to this day it is still my favorite book. It kind of sucks that this is going away.”

Costco Return Policy

What are the details of the famous return policy?

“We guarantee your satisfaction with every product we sell and will refund the purchase price,” said the return policy States.

There are some exceptions to this 100% satisfaction guarantee, which are:

  • Electronics – Returns will be accepted within 90 days from the date the member received the product.
  • Diamonds – 1.00 ct or larger must be returned with all original documentation within 48 hours and will be inspected for authenticity.
  • Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages – These items cannot be returned by law.
  • Items with a limited life expectancy, such as batteries and tires, cannot be returned.
  • Special order kiosk and custom installed programs may only be returned or refunded if under warranty repair/replacement.
  • Gold bars, silver bars and coins are non-refundable.
  • Store Cards are non-refundable.
  • Airline and live performance event items are non-refundable.

Costco memberships can be canceled and refunded at any time if the customer is dissatisfied.

Others joked that their parents would tempt them with a book if they behaved well during a shopping trip.

Angry buyers attacked the wholesale chain and some claimed there was no point visiting the warehouses now.

Perplexed consumers said they don’t understand the reason for the decision to stop selling books year-round.

The US Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.

Meanwhile, The US Sun reported that bosses are working to ensure prices are lower for customers.

“We are intentionally creating incremental value for our members by offering lower prices wherever possible,” revealed Gary Millerchip, CFO of Costco, on an earnings call.

Millerchip appeared to reassure shoppers by revealing that the price of Costco’s $1.50 hot dog will remain the same.

But he did not clarify whether membership fees will be increased or not.
